From the 1960s to 2005 AFCLU aimed to help Christians associated with the Royal Air Force to keep in contact with each other. It recognised the value of Christian fellowship in maintaining an individual's Christian faith. It was also a response to the needs of serving Royal Air Force Christians who are often subject to postings and detachments, which disrupt the normal pattern of Christian fellowship.

Now the Armed Forces Christian Union is involved in bringing a Christian ministry of encouragement, with an emphasis on prayer support, to its membership, both serving (all ranks) and civilian throughout the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force.
