Mast construction project.   (a cheap mast design)

This project came about as a result of the original mast, which was supported and camouflaged by a convenient              tree getting to look a bit dodgy after the strong winds of winter.

Close up of mast construction, showing welds.

The new mast is of lattice construction and formed from three 10mm dia mild steel legs each 6m long.  With 6mm steel bar used to form the bracings. The legs were jigged 170mm apart by using plywood end formers and two intermediate triangular plywood spacers. The whole lot was set on a level surface and a stringline used to check the alignment. The bracing was formed by bending the 6mm bar round pins fixed to a scaffolding plank. The bracing steel was first cut into 1500mm lengths, this makes it managable to work with  for both bending and setting in place prior to welding. The bracing is fixed to the legs with steel wire, and then tacked prior to final welding. The welding should be staggered to prevent distortion. The top and bottom will require finishing off with ring of flatbar, this will allow attachment of hinge plates and any other fixings. After de slagging and grinding off snots, the whole lot was treated with two pack etch primer and metal primer before a coat of gloss paint. As a further protection it is intended to coat it with Waxoyl. The whole cost for the steel was £22 which is the other reason for this project.
