EMPLOYMENT HISTORY:

Spinnaker International, Saltash, Cornwall (June 2007 - Dec 2007)

Work involved testing out various different GSM, GPS and Pager modules to be incorporated into Spinnaker's products. Redesigning existing boards using Pads logic and Pads Layout to incorporate these. Writing test programs in PIC assembler targeted at PIC 629 and PIC 8722  micros. Verification and Validation testing to meet EMC and ESD immunity levels.

Tyco Electronics, Bodelwyddan, North Wales. (March 2005 – March 2007)

This was an initial 3 month contract extended 6 times. Designed two of the boards in a system being developed for BT. Work involved, initial concept, schematic capture using PADs logic and DxDesigner, some embedded C programming targeted at a PIC18F6622 microcontroller, prototype testing and parametric conformance testing.  Verification testing and writing scripts in VB. Also EMC testing and finding solutions to meet BT requirements. I also modified / redesigned and prototyped quite a number of other boards which were mainly developed for demonstration purposes to potential customers.

Palmer Environmental, Cwmbran. (Oct 2004 –March 2005)

To take an existing product (mixed signal and analogue design) and make it compliant with EMC regulations. Involved complete PCB redesign using Protel to add extra filter circuitry, improve the grounding, add inductors, tranzorbs and metal cans around the most problematic parts. The main problem areas were caused by switch mode power supplies, battery charger circuits and 1000V LCD backlight drivers.

Shorekarn, Tewsksbury (Feb 2004-May 2004)

Shorekarn made Message Maker displays but went into liquidation shortly after I joined. However, I the won short term contracts repairing and commissioning Ex-Shorekarn customers. (In fact I still get some work from this)

ABB Offshore Sytems, Nailsea ( June 2003 - Feb 2004)

Worked under contract as a consultant design engineer. This was an analogue design roll which involved designing a power amplifier and receiver filter circuit for use on a back up comms system. The method employed  uses a DQPSK system for modulating comms onto a 3.3kV power line. The system is used on an oil pipeline at the bottom of the North sea working over distances of 200km.

Motorola ECID, Blagrove, Swindon.

· Jan 1998- Dec 2002. Promoted to Lead engineer in charge of a team of 9 engineers.

· July 1995- Dec 1997. Senior engineer.

· June 1994- June 1995 working as a contractor.

Took voluntary redundancy at end of 2002 as my roll was moving to China.

My roll at Motorola was to support the 2G product range of base stations. This involved managing a team of engineers with the aim of resolving customer issues with the product, finding fixes to known bugs and overcoming production and obsolescence issues. It was customer facing roll and I quite often had to travel oversees to investigate and resolve issues in the field.

I helped save millions of pounds for the company by identifying cheaper alternative commercial grade components and by redesigning circuits so that large numbers of discrete components could be consolidated quickly into large EPLDs.

In 1998 I was seconded by Motorola to Vodacom in South Africa to system fault find. I spent 3 months in South Africa. Shortcomings in the software, database set up and documentation were identified and problems with third party equipment were discovered.

Westinghouse Signals Ltd, Chippenham, Wilts. (1989-1993)

Worked on the ATP and ATO systems for use on the Central line and Jubilee line.

BM Machines, Taunton, Somerset. (1987-1989)

Worked on a control system which was used to control and display information on a paper winding machine. Work mainly involved writing software in assembler for Z80 based processors.

Dowty Maritime Systems Ltd, Weymouth. (1987)

OSEL. Gt. Yarmouth, Norfolk. (1986-1987)
