History of Frome
Town
The
peak of the woollen industry in Frome was from about 1500 to the 1700s With the
growth in trade came a increase in the town population and that part of
'Trinity' that was not demolished in the 1960s consists of characteristic
'workers cottages' of the late 17th century. Apart from the cottages and the
examples of cloth merchants houses that still exist within the town, there are
the remains of peculiar structures, round towers, that once were integral to
the cloth trade. The best know and most assessable of these is known as the
'Round Tower' located between the 'Black swan and the library. This structure
was renovated and converted in the 1990s into office space and now houses the
Tourist Office.

Original it was a 'stove' formerly used
for drying cloth that had been dyed and washed.
