Christo Inventory for Substance-misuse Services (CISS)

CISS technical information

Reliability

Internal consistency of items = .74 (Alpha reliability coefficient) derived from scores of 243 clients (mostly methadone maintained) from the Royal Free Drug Service in London.

Total score test-retest reliability = .83 (Pearson correlation), .82 (Intra-class correlation) derived from 60 stabilised methadone maintained clients, mean retest interval 53.8 days (sd = 12.1).

Total score inter-rater reliability = .84 (Pearson correlation), .82 (Intra-class correlation) derived from 20 stabilised methadone maintained clients, mean retest interval 45.1 days (sd = 28.2).

Total score inter-rater reliability = .91 (Pearson correlation), .91 (Intra-class correlation) derived from 20 consecutive intake referrals at CORE trust, an abstinence oriented day centre, retests performed on same day.

Convergent Validity

Opiate Treatment Index (OTI) sub-scale correlations with corresponding CISS items and CISS total score

(Using Spearman's rho, N = 90)

OTI Polydrug use:

CISS Drug / alcohol use .91

CISS total score .80

OTI Injecting and sexual:

CISS Sexual / injecting risk .70

CISS total score .43

OTI Social functioning:

CISS Social Functioning .43*

CISS total score .49*

OTI Social functioning:

CISS Occupation .45*

"

OTI Crime:

CISS Criminal involvement .99

CISS total score .72

OTI Health:

CISS General health .83

CISS total score .66

OTI Psychological adjustment:

CISS Psychological .87

CISS total score .81

 * Correlations with the OTI social functioning section are low because that particular section of the OTI uses a six-month time frame. All other OTI sections use a one month time frame as does the CISS.

Correlations with other psychological measures, corresponding CISS item and CISS total score

(Using Spearman's rho, N = 90)

STAI trait-anxiety:

CISS Psychological .82

CISS total score .62

STAXI trait-anger:

CISS Psychological .41

CISS total score .37

Rosenberg self-esteem:

CISS Psychological -.80

CISS total score -.67

Divergent (discriminant) Validity

A CISS cut-off score of 6 or less can be used to indicate "good outcome" for abstinence based treatment.

This correctly identified 88% of six-month outcomes where drug use was assessed only in the month before follow-up.

This correctly identified 84% of outcomes where drug use was assessed over the entire six-month follow-up period.

See section on comparison scores and outcomes for abstinence oriented treatment.
