Eight pupils at the end of their first year in Secondary School, chose as their option for Activities Week (May 22-26) to take part in an environmental project.
History
The general principles of a Community environment policy was worked out by the Ministers of the Environment at their meeting in Bonn on 31 October 1972.
1979 established a common procedure for the exchange of information on the quality of surface fresh water in the Community.
This set down the aims & objectives for the monitoring and exchange of information on the level of pollution in fresh water in the European Union. Sampling or measuring stations were to be set up and all member countries were expected to follow the directive.
By the year 2000, national action programmes for integrated groundwater protection and management should be fully drawn up and functioning. This information was gathered from over a thousand documents produced by the European Union showing the importance given to this matter by the EU.
The River Don has historically been quite badly polluted from agricultural run-off, sewage and industrial effluent.
Recently, steps have been taken to improve the situation and we wanted to know how we could test the water to find out how clean it was.
We though of simple methods such as looking at the water and collecting organisms - indicator species.
We also wanted to measure factors in the water in a simple way - test strips.
We wanted to use more technological methods - data logging.
