Barton High Level Bridge.
The bridge was opened in October 1960 to carry the new Stretford - Eccles by-pass road which later became the M63 motorway, and which in turn became part of the M60 Manchester Outer Ring Road. The bridge is 2,425 feet long and gives a clearance of 82 feet above the canal. The eighteen spans of the bridge are supported on reinforced concrete piers which in turn support a superstructure of welded steel girders. The decking is constructed out of concrete slabs. Like the nearby swing bridge it was meant to relieve, the original bridge soon became inadequate for the increasing road traffic and the original two lane in each direction dual carriageway was widened with a third lane being added in each direction. The new lanes are supported on extra concrete piers built alongside the originals, and the widened sections were opened in 1990. One person was killed during the construction of the original sections of the bridge.
