Cadishead Viaduct. The viaduct was completed in 1893 very close to the original route of the railway. The new viaduct was used only by goods trains for the first few months with all passenger traffic remaining on the original lines until it's safety had been assured. A Board of Trade test on the viaduct shortly after it's completion involved the positioning of ten seventy five ton locomotives on it at the same time whilst a thorough check for disturbance and cracking was carried out. The viaduct was opened for passenger traffic on 27th May 1893. The railway line (Stockport - Liverpool) has since been closed and the viaduct now stands idle apart from carrying pipelines across the canal to the petrochemical plants at Carrington. |
