Knutsford Road Swing Bridge. All the swing bridges along the canal are constructed to a similar design with only slight differences due to the road width and this one, carrying the main A50 road over the canal, is no exception. The bridge is constructed so that it rests on an annular girder of 31ft in diameter, supported by a pivot and a roller path. Sunk into the concrete base is a lower roller containing between 60 - 64 cast iron rollers. A toothed rack is bolted to the annular girder and the whole assembly is set in motion by means of hydraulic pinions. |
