Machinery used during the canal construction.

The enginner responsible for the construction of the canal was a great believer in the use mechanisation, and employed a great deal of machinery to help in the construction.   A  list of the machinery used is given below:-.

97 steam excavators.

197 locomotives.

6,300 trucks and waggons.

194 cranes - mostly steam driven.

212 steam driven pumps.

182 steam engines.

59 piling engines.

And last but certainly not least, he built a railway which ran along the full length of the canal .
