Masting crane.
Situated just upstream from Eastham locks is a small quay with a very tall 30 ton crane. This is used for removing and storing the tops of masts and funnels of ships which are too tall to meet the height restrictions along the canal. At several points along canal are "trip wires" set at a height that will ensure that any vessel passing under them will also clear the bridges along the route. These wires can be clearly seen at the locks along the canal. |
