Stanlow.

Two docks were built on the site of the medieval Stanlow Abbey to handle petroleum products for the nearby refinery complex - one of the largest in Europe.

The two docks  were built  on the estuary side of  the canal and are situated some distance from the  refineries for safety reasons, cargos being piped under the canal  to storage tanks on the opposite bank.

Construction work started on the first of the docks in 1919 and it was opened in 1922, the second dock opened in 1933. The two docks currently handle approximately three million tons of cargo per year.
