Warburton Bridge.

This attractive cantilever bridge  carries a minor road running between Warburton in the south,  and the main A57 road at Hollins Green. . The road is carried  75 feet above the canal, and the bridge is built in a similar style to the  latchford_high_level_bridge.htm .

The bridge was built to replace an old stone built toll bridge  which crossed the Mersey nearby. When the canal was built the flow of the river was diverted  leaving the original bridge "high and dry" , but more importantly the crossing point had been destroyed. Once the new cantilever bridge was completed the toll was transferred to it and is still collected from all users today.

The bridge   is the only  toll bridge  to cross the canal  and   the toll booth situated on the southern  approach road occasionaly causes large tailbacks of vehicles to form at peak hours.

During the 1930's  the son of  a  local manufacturers flew under the bridge in small bi-plane from the nearby Barton airfield,  he was suitably reprimanded but went on to fight in the Battle of Britain.
