
Market Harborough Singers - Christmas 1998
Initially formed in 1972 by Robert Smyth School, Market Harborough, head of music Barry Clark, the Market Harborough Singers regularly give concerts through out the U.K., particularly to raise funds for charity.
As a competitive choir, the Singers appeared with distinction at the Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod and twice represented Britain in the international round of "Let the Peoples Sing" contest, after being voted the outstanding UK choir by BBC Radio 3. They were finalists in the inaugural BBC Television Sainsbury's Choir of the Year competition in 19..
They have worked with Sir Charles Groves at the Barbican, have appeared in all of London's South Bank concert halls and at the Royal Albert Hall. They have also promoted their own concerts with distinguished soloists.
Overseas tours have included prestigious trips to Hungary and Czechoslovakiaand visits to the USA, Canada, Switzerland Germany and the Netherlands. Most recently, they have visited The Czech Republic (1997) and Northern Ireland (1999).
The Singers repertoire is wide ranging across many musical styles. Choral works to unaccompanied part songs, folk music to pop arrangements feature in their concerts. They have also commissioned and premiered works by Edward Gregson, and local composers Trevor Hold, John Hoyle and Kendall Kirkland.
On home ground, their traditional Christmas concerts have become an essential part of the festive season in Market Harborough. Celebrity guests have included such names as Nicholas Parsons, Jon Pertwee, Patricia Routledge, Janet Suzman, Martin Jarvis and in 2000, Simon Russell-Beale.
