March 2002
OK - I've implemented a new policy for this page - seeing as it just wasn't happening......life is too short and there are so many songs to write. Anyway, as from about now this page will feature things that I found, or that people send to me, that I consider of some minor interest, amusement or entertainment value - as well as anything else I can think of.
So, in advance thanks to those who send me stuff - u know who u r.
Hopefully it might mean that this page does get updated at least more than twice a year....

Irish Air disaster !
Ireland's worst air disaster occurred early this morning when a small two-seater Cessna plane crashed into a cemetery. Irish search and rescue workers have recovered 1826 bodies so far and expect that number to climb as digging continues into the night.

Now I know I'm not really keeping strictly to the title of this page by only putting things up here when I remember/get chance/can be bothered etc etc - but that's just the way it is.....anyway, I'm sure you'd rather have quality over quantity......shame we haven't got either!! It has however, been a good year so far - hence the lack of activity on this site - a thousand apologies!
Anyway, onto more important 'things'.....
H
ere we are - the crazy comic book world of 2001AD has finally become reality. Talking of which, I watched the inauguration of a certain George W Bush Jnr - now the president of the US....should we be worried?
If you haven't seen these comments, allegedly attributed to the afore mentioned
George W Bush Jnr, have a read and make your own mind up....

"If we don't succeed, we run the risk of failure." ....George W. Bush, Jr.
"Republicans understand the importance of bondage between a mother and child." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr.
"Mars is essentially in the same orbit...Mars is somewhat the same distance from the Sun, which is very important. We have seen pictures where there are canals, we believe, and water. If there is water, that means there is oxygen. If oxygen, that means we can breathe." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr., 8/11/94
"The Holocaust was an obscene period in our nation's history. I mean in this century's history. But we all lived in this century. I didn't live in this century." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr., 9/15/95
"One word sums up probably the responsibility of any Governor, and that one word is 'to be prepared'." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr., 12/6/93
"Verbosity leads to unclear, inarticulate things." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr., 11/30/96
"I have made good judgments in the past. I have made good judgments in the future." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr.
"The future will be better tomorrow." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr.
"We're going to have the best educated American people in the world." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr., 9/21/97
"I stand by all the misstatements that I've made." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr. to Sam Donaldson, 8/17/93
"We have a firm commitment to NATO, we are a part of NATO. We have a firm commitment to Europe. We are a part of Europe." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr.
"I am not part of the problem. I am a Republican" ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr.
"A low voter turnout is an indication of fewer people going to the polls." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr
"We are ready for any unforeseen event that may or may not occur." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr., 9/22/97
"For NASA, space is still a high priority." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr., 9/5/93
"It isn't pollution that's harming the environment. It's the impurities in our air and water that are doing it." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr.
"[It's] time for the human race to enter the solar system." ....Governor George W. Bush, Jr.

In the City Travis Thing
Now obviously I haven't seen all the bands performing at the In the City festival in Manchester - but on last nights showing I don't think I could .......we don't need another Travis - one is enough, no! one is probably too much.....but none the less, wistful young men kept droning on in what they thought was a melodic/atmospheric fashion to bore the pants off the rest of us.......
Apart from a truly dull widdly widdly thrash effort, the only light at the end of the tunnel were Fat Controller - worth a mention if for no other reason that they don't sound anything like Travis. Hurrah!

Do u hate Travis? Then Go HERE.

Ambient Olympian Thing
The Olympic games have started in Sydney - it's pretty good ambient TV - you can leave it on in the background and ignore it, but you can also dip in whenever you fancy and always find something to watch for a few minutes. Currently, this seems to mainly consist of people cycling round and round and round and round, and swimming up and down and up and down..........having huge feet seems to be a definite genetic advantage for this. I suppose this would also make it more difficult to fall over; I can think of many situations where this could be useful................

Oily thing
Protestors blockade oil refineries around the country to protest against the price of fuel - currently about 80p/litre - causing miles of queues at garages all over the UK. Whether the price of fuel should be reduced is up for discussion - if people are to use their cars less (don't forget that hole in the ozone layer), we all know the quickest way to change habits is by the £ in your pocket.......but then if there is no decent alternative in public transport......and so the arguments go on and on and on.........
The best outcome of the whole debacle was the government realising that they ain't so great, haven't got the public or media in their pockets and they are no more 'in touch' than any other political party...........and this petrol-powered guitar is going to have to go........any offers?

Liberating thing
Jon hands in his notice from his job (enough is enough) - this can only mean more time for the dizzydizzy cause - Things can only get bett........Goddamit..........I've got to admit, it's getting better............No, Goddamit, I will not finish on a cliche or song..........anyway - it was a Perfect Day.......oh, sod it.

Free things
Summer's here and the Festival season is upon us. With the old favourites and the rest with the big names charging big bucks to get in, Manchester led the way with two free festivals in two weeks. The Northern Quarter festival last week was a nice mix of bands on several stages, various acts, DJ's and other stuff (even Thai boxing) on the streets of Manchester's Northern Quarter. The entertainment was constant and varied - no one really famous, but this was compensated for by a pretty good atmosphere and the fact that being in Manchester itself all the bars and cafes were open. Good Stuff!

The D-percussion festival at Castlefield this weekend was a bigger affair with The Fall (who were crap - too pissed - allegedly) and the Buzzcocks (who weren't) headlining on the Sunday night. There seemed to be less going on with most activity centred around the main stage - obviously the whole thing was ok, but somehow didn't really have that festival atmosphere (where's Russ Abbot when you need him?) - but then for free you really shouldn't complain - oh, and it rained a bit as well..........

Local thing
Went to see Manchester band Cafe Assassin play a gig to launch their new CD. Just a blatant plug for some friends, but if you don't support you friends who are you going to help?

21-July-2000
'Makes you think' thing
Paul Young - no, not that one, who lays his hat all over day-time TV - the other one, who used to be in Sad Cafe and sing with Mike and the Mechanics - well he died. As well as being from Manchester UK, apparently he didn't live far from me. Regardless of the music or anything else, these things always remind me to just get the music out where people can hear it - so much to do, so little time!!
Whoever u r, whatever u do - just do what u want and get on with it NOW!

Highly amusing thing

Tony Blair (British Prime Minister) comes up with the half-baked idea of trying to fine people on the spot for drunken and rowdy behaviour'.
Is this man serious?
Is he mad?

Copper:
You're rather drunk and are enjoying yourself too much - that'll be £100 please.
Drunken reveller: I'm sorry officer, I don't have that much cash on me at the moment - American Express?
Copper: Why that'll..........
sorry......anyway, you get the idea........
The very next week, young Master Blair (16 years old) is found incapable, lying on the pavement vomiting, abandoned by his so-called friends after a bout of underage drinking. Once an ambulance crew decided he wasn't dying he was taken to the local police station, where after admitting his heinous crime gave a false name and address. Diligently, the police officer investigated further and searched the young man and soon discovered his true iD. The rest, as they say, is history - BRILLIANT!!

Good thing

A pretty good week in St Ives, Cornwall - surfing, checking out the art galleries and having great food and drink in cool places - I suppose the only disappointment was that I had to leave and head back to reality.......which ain't that bad really either..........sorry!

8-June-2000
Minor amusement thing

Stumbled across the repeat of Jo Whiley's TV programme - had Ronan Keating on, some other polite young man (from Five, sorry 5ive, or Westlife I think, I don't know which) and Keith Allen, who's usually good for stirring things up a bit. I only caught the last part of the programme - the boy-band boys seemed to say that as long as everything was a laugh, and no one was taking themselves too seriously, then everything was OK. However, when Keith suggested they weren't 'important' they both lost their sense of humour very quickly and retorted in unison "we ARE important!" - now how sad/funny is that. They actually think they are important! Like shooting fish in a barrel or what.....
Disappointed that Keith didn't really wind them up as much as he could have, but then it wasn't much of challenge, and that the boyz don't really seem to have much grasp of reality - "Kids have got good taste, they'll only buy good music" - yeah like S CLub 7, Jason Donovon (or anyone from a soap for that matter), and remember The Bay City Rollers? You get the idea I think......

27-May-2000
Pondering thing

Hugh Grant and Liz Hurley have split up................ha ha ha, as if I care.........

but did see The Filth and the Fury - a nice look at the Sex Pistols with a bit of social context thrown in for good measure. Made me think we're not going to get another 'punk' for quite a while - we're all just far too happy with our lot, placated with dreams of winning the lottery (yeah - right) so no one bothers to stop and say "fuck it" ....no one even bothers, full stop! It's not as though we haven't got stuff to moan about or things we don't like (governments aside) but it seems ultimately pointless making any sort of gesture - it will only be adopted/absorbed/abused/diluted/disolved by the mass media and everyone will HATE YOU!!!
Maybe, just maybe, I'm wrong..........

RIP thing

The Coffee Republic on the 3rd floor of Paperchase in ManchesterUK seems to have disappeared, or at best moved to Picadilly.........what was probably the best place to have a coffee in Manchester is now gone.....why? Where else could you check out groovy paper, get into some funky origami, and meet up with friends for a chat on Saturday afternoon over a coffee and blueberry muffin - away from the shopping madness of the Arndale centre. Let's hope something takes it place soon...........but in the mean time, where can I go?

Disappointing thing

Brian Eno's Diary (A year with swollen appendices)
P.124 "Marius and I did a crossword together and I lost £20 betting him that 519 was a prime number......."
519 a prime number!! How could Brian Eno (Mr Muso-Intellectual) not know that any number, if the individual numbers that make it up when added together are divisible by three, then the original number is also divisible by three!! Disappointing indeed but hey! Brian - want to bet me $20,000 that 351 is a prime number....
or 717 - go on, that's a prime number too, just $50.....
Oh well never mind........
