PUB SPIRITS

There are lots of ghost stories related to buildings of regular social activity, especially public houses and hotels. Strangely enough, many ghost sightings in Market Harborough seem to occur at these sites even though the establishments in question were demolished years before.

One of the stories contained in the video 'Haunted Harborough' takes place outside the town in the nearby village of Weston-by-Welland, in 'The Wheel & Compass'. The proprietors of the pub, Mr. & Mrs. Woolman, told us of a headstone inscribed in Gaelic that they uncovered during refurbishment of the kitchen and of the eerie happenings they experienced.

One event in particular turned out to be expensive - that of water taps being turned on in the middle of the night resulting in the flooding of the ground floor and bar area. Every night the taps were checked, only to be found running or trickling the morning after on several occasions.

One local tale tells of an Irish builder being killed during the pub's construction and laid to rest under the floor, hence the discovery of the headstone!
