Go Large in the Cathedral .....
It was exciting! What to wear? who would be there? What should we do first? which
cocktail to taste first? so ran the rambling preparation for the great gathering .....
but that was just from the adults!
Setting off with some very excited young people, it was all very catching. Arriving at
the Cathedral we were lucky to be able to find a parking spot on Palace Green. The
sight that greeted us was truly amazing.........a great long queue of young people
waiting to get in! We had tickets so were able to go straight in more or less.
After a few instructions about requirements and a meeting place afterwards, we let the
younger ones off the lead! They were not allowed outside any way and the place
was very well stewarded, so we knew they were safe. Besides, they were 'talent
spotting' and didn't want us cramping their style.

Laser lights - and very good ones - reached out throughout the night and traced their
way over the stones of the cathedral ceiling and walls. An escapologist was strutting
his stuff( in a manner of speaking) and talking about his faith at the same time
.....not easy. The bands were also pushing out their music and judging from the
crowd and the dancing, it was well received - if a little loud for some of us.
Bishop Michael and Bishop Alan wandered around and tried to have conversations with
folks..not easy over the decibels. Archdeacon Trevor wandered around looking quite
bemused by it all....but then after all it was Friday night!
Cocktail Bar beckoned and choices had to be made. No alcohol of course. Umm - a
Mass Breakout or a Passionate Kiss? Hild's Hairnet didn't invite, and Bishop's Crook
seemed to be a little ambitious for the lowly cleric in our midst - so a Mass Breakout
it was - and yes we queued with the kids - not ours who had by now disowned us - and
we bought our cocktails and crisps and sweets! Saturday morning at the flicks -
remember that? We later sent Nick back to the bar to ask for three Passionate Kisses !!
He handled that remarkably well - not sure about the fella who took the order! In a
quiet conversation with Archdeacon Trevor Rev. Linda confided that they were very nice
but, for her, lacked a little something. Quick as a flash and sharp as a needle he
replied: 'Yes - gin!' She told us she never disagreed with an Archdeacon!
Huge Playstations were tucked into the trancept of the cathedral nave and attracted
large groups; the Baptistry was given over to art work with an artist there to advise
- and that attracted a group right through the night which produced a very striking
mural. But the night was relaxed, informal and just easy and no one had to join in
anything. For most it was simply a place to hang out. It was certainly loud, and Nick
Rowark wondered about dear old Cuthbert stirring in his grave .......Rev. Linda was
moved to sing 'them bones, them bones, them dry bones... but she thought that Cuthbert
would approve of the young people being there in such great numbers, though he might
wish himself back in the peace and quiet his beloved Farne Isles. A great night and
full marks to everyone involved in organising it: hopefully it will be repeated.
The journey home was full of chat and giggles! We stopped at Langley Park for chips -
the owner nearly had a fit when we asked for 14 bags of chips - but did a special
deal for us.
A great night: and as ever, our young people were a credit to us.
