MIGLIA QUADRATO LONDINIUM PEDO

MIGLIA QUADRATO

The unique quality of this traditional event is that it takes place entirely
within the square mile of the city of London, with knowledge and kind co-operation
of the City of London Police. The Miglia Quadrato requires much of the skill
and supplies much of the fun of normal rallying with very little expense.

Anything (roadworthy) on four wheels will be serviceable and even your
Lamborghini will use little more than a gallon of petrol. - The event was first
conceived in 1957 at the time of the Suez Crisis, when no fuel was available for
motor sport.

The Miglia Quadrato can be compared with an all night treasure hunt, without
any navigation tricks or rough roads. The event is suitable for newcomers,
but still difficult enough to challenge the experts (there will be no clean sheets).
In addition, most clues, once found, will be easy to read.

The object is to answer the questions given on the route card at locations
defined by map references. if these references are plotted accurately, the
answers are easy to find (of course, some are easier than others) and there
is the fascination of rallying on a 6 inch to mile (1:10000) map instead
of the more familiar 1 inch (1:50,000) maps).

To encourage newcomers advice will be available at the start on how to plot references
and on any questions which you might have.

Londinium - the ancient City of London - has a history stretching back over
centuries. Today, modern office blocks line the skyline - disappearing are the
narrow streets, the leaning lanes .... but there still remain hints of that past.
A crumbling gravestone faintly bearing a memory to a citizen, a trader ... high
up a rusting plaque marks a parish boundary, recalls the destruction of a building
in the Great Fire ... a forgotten artist has inscribed his name on a statue...
All these, and more, - the historical and unusual - survive within the City
largely unseen and uncared for. It is to the oddities and antiquities that are
to be found in the City that we hope to lead you. Through mazes and labrinths
of tiny streets ansd alleys, through courtyards and passageways. The unseen
London, the London of the ...

LONDINIUM PEDO

The unique quality of this event is that it takes place entirely within the square
mile of the City of London, with the kind permission and co-operation of the City
of London Police. The object is to answer the questions given on the route card;
the location of an answer is defined by the instructions attached to each question.
The answers are easy to find, although, of course, some are easier than others.

The route itself will be straightforward - simple directions and sketch maps - and
at different points you will hand in your answers and collect fresh instructions
for the next part of the route. To ensure that everyone has the same chance, there
will be a time limit for each section of the route - this will ensure that no-one
spends too long searching for an elusive clue. So that everyone does not search for
the same clue at the same time, each team will start separately and there will be
different starts. Everyone, however, will traverse the same route (a circular one)
in the same time. You do not need to be expert at reading maps. You need only a watch
and pencil - and, naturally, comfortable walking shoes (although the route is not
very long and the duration only three hours). Of course, there will be suitable
awards for the leaders. You can be sure of an enjoyable and interesting afternoon.

A separate but concurrent event the MINI-PEDO, which is a subset of the overall route,
will take place. Entry to this is strictly for families (i.e. those accompanied by
children too young to contribute), the more senior (we suggest over 50), or those
who for medical reasons are not up to the full route.
