WORLD
TOWER
All
over the earth, millions of homes, hotels, shops and
other business premises, cinemas, village halls and
even wooden huts now had, alongside their other media
accessories of choice, the IMAGO device. Except the
IMAGO was not an accessory, it was a must. Nor was it
a matter of individual choice since refusal of the device
was against the law.
The
IMAGO was a technically brilliant and very unobtrusive
design, an updated and superior version of the virt-set
which Byron had used while convalescing after his deadly
fall up until the present time of robust health. And
despite Byron being fully recovered, he still preferred,
on most occasions, to meet his public via this method;
it gave him and everyone else a greater sense of his
power, it gave the impression that he was omnipresent.
The
device consisted of two small, plastic pods filled with
some very clever electronics and a mirrored surface
on one end of each pod. The pods could be buried, one
in the floor and one in the ceiling, with the mirrored
ends left visible and facing each other. there was no
on-off switch for the device; the electronics were always
in a passive state of readiness.
Like
the old virt-set which it replaced, the IMAGO was still
a hologram machine. When activated it would produce
a life-like, three-dimensional image between the two
pods; ideally, the image of a person; specifically,
the image of Byron East. The pods contained speakers
which worked in synchronisation with Byron's lip movements.
They also contained camera and listening equipment.
It
was known by most people how the security services of
the Global-Order operated the system. They could not
watch and listen-in to everyone at the same time. But
what they did do, was to have all the IMAGOs locked
into computers which picked, at random, people and places
to observe, especially when a holographic Byron went
over the air-waves. There would be a few moments allowed
for the observers to worship before he began his speech,
and a similar time-span when he had finished, just before
his departure from the scene. It was of course, bad
news for anyone found showing a lack of due reverance.
"
It really is very unfortunate to lose the greatest naval
battle-group the world has ever seen in such a way.
Our efforts to deflect or disintegrate asteroid Attila
were not entirely successful. And, as you are all probably
aware, the city of San Francisco no longer exists. I
find it amazing that such a small chunk of inert material
could cause such destruction. Still, let's not dwell
on bad tidings."
Byron's
holographic image appeared thoughtful for a moment.
"
I have spoken to Hyram about my disappointment that
we were not able to deal adequately with the threat
from outside our atmosphere. Sky Dragon was itself a
big disappointment to me. We need much more power available
so that we can neutralise and defeat any similar threat
which may arise in the future. After all, we can't have
our glorious New World Order living under the threat
of death and destruction, from wherever it might come.
the good news is.... I believe I have the answer!
"
You see dear friends, believe it or not, each one of
you has a little bit of power. Yes, I know it doesn't
count for much compared to mine; nevertheless it is
there, and billions of little bits can add up to quite
a lot. I need to be the focus of that power so that,
when added to mine, we can really move mountains
"
I think the time has come to try a little experiment.
First, turn on your TVs! The New World Channel. You
will all see a bird's eye view of the large sea-water
lake which used to be San Francisco. Truly amazing,
not a single building left standing. You may also see
a couple of our aircraft circling around. They are providing
us with the pictures.
"
Now I want you all to lie or kneel down as if in worship,
but this time concentrate as hard as you can and hand
your power, your very inner essence, over to me, completely.
Then I will show you what can be done. When I hold up
my hands, we begin. And we continue until you hear my
command to stop. I feel certain you will all be quite
surprised at what we can accomplish when we work together.
