PORTUGAL

Despite its small size Portugal's landscape varies dramatically. Its wines are just as diverse with as many different wine styles as the myriad combinations of its topography and climate. Near the coast the wines are heavily influenced by the Atlantic. Moving inland this influence quickly disappears, which allows the same wine region to produce crisp dry whites and at the same time offer complex and full-bodied reds. from Tras-os-Montes in the north to the Algarve in the south there are more than one hundred native grape varieties planted, all with different personalities yielding a wealth of tastes and aromas.

The vineyards are situated a mile or so outside the lovely old Wealden Village of Biddenden, with its High Street flanked by half-timbered houses once used for the weaving of cloth. The legend of the 11th century Biddenden maids, Eliza and Mary Chulkhurst is world famous and the charity in their name still exists today. The wines regularly achieve competition awards.
