2001 was clearly Roger’s best chance yet, having been offered one of Ben Atkins’ Rêve Red Bull Ducatis for the event.  The team needs little introduction to British fans, having dominated the British Superbike team championship in recent years, and in 2001 clinching the riders championship with John Reynolds.

The bike is a full spec 2001 Ducati Corsa, a 996cc v-twin superbike, weighing 165kgs and producing a reputed 170bhp at the rear wheel.

Roger is no stranger to Ducatis, having raced one to British and European championship success in 1991, and even qualified 3rd on it at Macau that year.  The Reve team arranged a test at Oulton Park to familiarise Roger with the bike, and make any changes to the baseline set-up before shipping the £150k package to Macau.

The perks of being on the front row of the grid - Roger waits patiently for the start of the 2000 Macau GP

Said Roger “Yes, I’m confident about my chances this time, the Ducati is a proven winning machine and the Rêve team, and particularly Technician Chris Anderson, are experienced at getting the best out of them.  When I tested it at Oulton Park I found it really easy to ride – smooth power delivery, plenty of top speed, and very good handling through the turns – ideal for Macau.  We discussed the set up and made some changes to the forks which I know will pay off once we get to Macau, we aim to get a head start and keep it that way!” he continued “I have often been the first four stroke or Superbike home, such as in 1996 when I was 2nd behind Phillip McCallen who was on a V-4 500 GP Yamaha. I’m extremely grateful to Ben and the team for giving me this chance to show what I can do on a top level bike”.

The field will be as competitive as ever with previous winner and lap record holder Dave Jefferies, and podium finishers Marl Miller (USA) and John McGuinness heading the entries.  Other contenders include Marcus Barth (Ger), and Thomas Hinterreiter (Aut), both on 1000cc Suzukis.
