Laws and Equations

A Mole is that amount of substance which contains as many elementary particles as there are atoms in 12 gms of carbon 12. (a kmole has as many particles as 12kg of carbon 12 ).

The Molar mass of (M) of a substance is the mass of 1 mole of the substance

Equation of State /Perfect Gas Law

p v = R T = Ro T / M

  • p = Pressure = N/m2
  • v = specific volume = m3 /kg
  • T = Absolute Pressure = deg Kelvin
  • Ro = Universal Gas Constant = 8.31 x103 N.m /kmole.K
  • R = Gas Constant = Ro / M ( N.m /kg.K )
  • M = mass/kmole of substance = kg / kmole

Van der Waals gas application of the Equation of State

( p + a / v2 ) ( v - b ) = R T = Ro T / M
