Surface Protection From Wear


All contacting surfaces with relative movement are subject to wear. Normally the method of eliminating and reducing surface wear is to provide a film of lubricant between the surfaces. However the condition of the surface and especially its hardness has can be controlled to mitigate the negative effects of surface interactions. A Hard material is more resistant to wear and abrasion compared to a soft material. Methods of providing a surface with desirable properties include:
  • Selecting a suitable parent material
  • Carburising (Case Hardening)
  • Nitriding

  • Coating Surface

  • Attaching an Intermediate Thin strip of suitable material
