A runaway winner for our first festival with forty real ales plus eight ciders selling out by 8.30 on Saturday evening. And we managed to sign up nearly 20 new members into the bargain.

Teej received the award of Shakespeare branch Pub of the Year on behalf of all the Bush staff in front of a packed pub, including members of both the Court Leet and White Hart Morris in their colourful costumes.

The Fish & Anchor, Offenham offered Wye Valley Butty Bach (4.5%), Ansells Mild (4.0%) and Davenport's Original Bitter (4.0%) then at the Kings Arms, Cleeve Prior we enjoyed Hobsons Best Bitter (3.8%) and Draught Bass (4.4%).

Our walking tour of the real ale pubs of Shipston started with four real ales at the Black Horse,Station Road, continued with three at the Horseshoe,Church Street, and finished with another four at the White Bear,High Street.

Wed 13th December, Alcester Inspection tour

We were joined for the evening by members from North Oxfordshire and Gloucestershire branches as we inspected the delights of Alcester. Starting at the Holly Bush, we split into smaller groups and managed to visit the Dog & Partridge, Lord Nelson, Three Tuns, and Turks Head before returning to the Holly Bush. We believe nobody managed to get to all five in the evening.

Wed 8th November, Stratford Inspection crawl

Our walking tour of some of the real ale pubs of Stratford started at the West End, Bull Street, which offered six real ales, then into town to the Old Thatch Tavern, Greenhill Street, for some Bard's Noble Fool, and the four real ales at the Rose & Crown, Sheep Street before finishing with three on offer at the Queens Head on Ely Street.

West Midlands Pub of the Year, presentation of certificate to David Garner by Nik Antona, CAMRA's West Midlands Regional Director. We were made very welcome by the new hosts, Kitty and Julian, and four Wizard Ales were available in excellent condition

A welcome return to a Good Beer Guide regular entry to sample Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) and Flagship (5.3%). We were also joined by members of the neighbouring Heart of Warwickshire branch.

Fourteen members were entertained by Sales Director Paul Evans and taken round the brewery by Brewer Jim Minkin. Members were all agreed that the Pure Gold (3.8%) and the Pure Ubu (4.5%) were both in fine fettle.

We enjoyed five real ales at the Bell: Hobson's Manor Ale (4.2%), Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) and Old Hooky (4.6%), Flowers Original (4.4%), and Wadworth 6X (4.3%). The Shakespeare featured Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) and Taylor's Landlord (4.3%)

Worcestershire Pub of the Year, presentation of certificate to Nigel Smith by Brett Laniosh, CAMRA's Worcestershire Area Organiser. Mike Garner of Wizard Brewery had made a special batch of Lola's Pride (4.5%) for the celebration.

We started with a small band at the White Hart, where two Adnams beers were available: Bitter (3.7%) and Broadside (4.7%), moving on later to the Bird In Hand for three Hook Norton beers: Hooky Dark (3.0%), Hooky Bitter (3.6%) and Old Hooky (4.6%).

We started at the Fox & Hounds, Gt Wolford, with Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) and M&B Brew XI (3.8%) and then on to the Norman Knight, Whichford, where we were joined by several visiting members from North Oxfordshire branch to sample the four Wizard Brewery beers available. This year's Shakespeare branch Pub of the Year award was presented to David Garner by new branch chairman, Lloyd Evans.

The "Dugout" bar of this unique National Trust property was the scene of Shakespeare branch's formal business meeting. A very good turnout ensured that a lively meeting ensued, with no fewer than three of our local brewers in attendance. Bob MacVie, a founder member and long-time Chairman of the branch, announced that he would be standing down from the Committee. Lloyd Evans was elected the new Chairman, and new Brewery Liaison Officers were also nominated for both Evesham Brewery and Wizard Brewery

We started at the Three Horseshoes, which offered Marston's Pedigree (4.5%), Adnams Bitter (3.7%), Tetley Bitter (3.6%) and Woods Merry England. Moving on to the Fish Inn we found Adnams Bitter (3.7%), Black Sheep Best Bitter (3.8%), Shepherd Neame Spitfire (4.5%), and Jennings Cumberland Ale (4.0%).

We met at the Stanway Brewery for an informative tour from Alex and sampled the Morris-A-Leaping, before proceeding to the Crown & Trumpet, Broadway, to continue sampling the excellent Stanway beers..

Returning to Worcestershire, we started at the Wheatsheaf, on High Street for Fuller's London Pride (4.1%) and Butcombe Bitter 4.0%. Later we moved on to the Round of Gras, Bretforton Road, for Flowers IPA (3.6%), Uley Pig's Ear (5.0%), North Cotswold Spring In Your Step (4.0%) and St George's Maiden's Saviour (3.9%)..

A walking tour of some real ale pubs of Evesham, We started at the Trumpet, on Merstow Green, with Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) and Double Stout (4.8%). Next up was the Old Red Horse in Vine Street with M&B Brew XI (3.8%), Draught Bass (4.4%) guest beers and draught cider. We finished at the Old Swanne, High Street with a choice of six ales. We were particularly impressed with Brain's Bread of Heaven (4.0%) and Malvern Hills Malvern Hills Bitter (3.9%)

A walking tour of the real ale pubs of Shipston, attracted a good turnout, including brewers Jon Pilling of North Cotswold and Mike Garner of Wizard Brewery. Starting at the Black Horse, Station Road, we continued via the Horse Shoe and the George Hotel to finish at the White Bear, High Street.

For our walking tour of the real ale pubs of Alcester, we were joined by two brewers (Jon Pilling of North Cotswold and Derek Hawyes of Shakespeare's Brewery) and a minibus of Gloucestershire members. Starting at the Holly Bush, Henley Street, most managed to make it to the Three Tuns, High Street, and some also called in at the Turk's Head, High Street, on their way back to the Holly Bush.

A goodly number turned out for a walking tour of the real ale pubs of Stratford, starting at Salmon Tail, Evesham Road for Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%), Everard Tiger (4.2%) and Draught Bass (4.4%), then on to the West End, Bull Street, for Adnams Bitter (3.7%), Hook Norton Old Hooky (4.6%), Timothy Taylor's Landlord (4.3%), Uley Old Spot (5.0%). Next up was the Windmill, Church Street, where Flowers Original (4.4%), Greene King IPA (3.6%) and Ruddles County (4.3%) was available, and we finished at the Garrick on High Street.

A small but select group managed to avoid the Stratford Mop, England's final World Cup qualifier and torrential rain and floods to start at White Lion, Tredington, which featured the very unusual Scottish Belhaven 80/- Ale (4.2%), as well as the regular Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%). Then on to the Plough at Stretton-on-Fosse to sample the North Cotswold Pig Brook Bitter (3.8%) and see the new licensees; but familiar faces, as the Sinclairs were well-known from their time at the Volunteer in Chipping Campden.

We started at the Foxhunter for some Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) and then made our way up the street to the Snitterfield Arms where the guest beer was Pete's Progress (3.8%) from Church End.

First call was the Childswickham Inn, Childswickham where the Hook Norton Hooky Bitter was unavailable and the Morland's Speckled Hen not in top form. Then on to the Good Beer Guide-listed Queens Head, Sedgeberrow, where the offerings of Greene King IPA, North Cotswold Summer Solstice and Wickwar Sunny Daze were much appreciated.

We started at the Red Lion, Little Compton, the only Donnington pub in Warwickshire, where we enjoyed both BB and SBA and then on to the Fox & Hounds, Great Wolford where beers included Black Sheep Bitter, Hook Norton Hooky Bitter and North Cotswold Genesis.

A good turnout for Shakespeare branch's formal business meeting, held in this Good Beer Guide regular and three times Pub of the Year, with eight real ales on offer. Andy Burt, the new Warwickshire Area Organiser made a first appearance and updated us on how he was proposing to run the county.

Wed 11th May 2005, North Cotswold Brewery, Ditchford Farm

Shakespeare branch's first trip to the home of Genesis enabled members to see the changes wrought by new proprietor Jon Pilling and to taste two of his dark beers Mayfair Mild (4.1%) and Stour Stout (5.0%). We then adjourned to the nearby Plough at Stretton-on-Fosse, where we could also sample some of Jon's Pig Brook Bitter (3.8%).

Sun 24th April 2005, Three Tuns, Alcester. Pub of the Year presentation

Shakespeare branch founder and rector of Alcester presented our Pub of the Year award to Pauline for the second year running. The Tuns was the place that started the real ale revival in Alcester, and has consistently offered six to eight excellent beers from a bewildering array of micro-breweries the length and breadth of Britain.

Starting at the Mother Huffcap, Great Alne we enjoyed Greene King IPA and Wadworth 6X, heard of plans to improve the pub, and welcomed a new member recently moved back to Alcester. We then moved on to the Bulls Head, Wootton Wawen for Banks's Original and Bitter and Marston Pedigree.

Wed 16th March 2005, Hungry Grafton and Beggarly Broom

On the second day of the Cheltenham National Hunt Festival, we expected to struggle to find a seat, but the pubs were surprisingly quiet, with Shakespeare CAMRA members almost outnumbering other customers. The Golden Cross, Ardens Grafton offered Hook Norton Best Bitter, Caledonian Deuchars IPAand Wye Valley Bitter, while the four at the Broom Tavern, Broom were Draught Bass, Adnams Broadside, Greene King IPA and Taylors Landlord.

There was just one item on the agenda, and we had a very good turnout to decide Shakespeare's submissions for the 2006 edition of CAMRA's best seller. Brian Cocken, former licensee of the George Hotel and Jim Sergeant had made the trip from Brailes to join us and enjoy the eight real ales on offer.

A goodly contingent included new North Cotswold Brewery owner, Jon Pilling. Our walking tour of the real ale pubs of Evesham started at the Trumpet, on Merstow Green, and went via the Old Red Horse and the the Royal Oak in Vine Street and finished at the Old Swanne, High Street where the Exmoor Gold was in excellent condition.

A walking tour of the real ale pubs of Shipston, starting at the Black Horse, Station Road, where we came across a birthday party for Brian Cocken, formerly of the George Hotel at Brailes. This inevitably delayed our departure into town, and we never got as far as the White Bear, managing only the Horse Shoe and the George Hotel before time was called.

We were joined by members of the adjoining Heart of Warwickshire branch and Mike Garner of Wizard Brewery. Local beers were in evidence at both pubs, with an offering from Slaughterhouse Brewery at the Boars Head and Warwickshire Best Bitter at the Stags Head.

A little trip up the Birmingham Road to a couple of pubs with a reputation for well-served ales. We started at the Dun Cow which featured Caledonian Deuchar's IPA, Greene King IPA and Tetley Bitter. We then moved on to the Masons Arms, where we were just too late to try Caledonian Brewery's special ale for the Rugby World Cup, Kangabroo, so had to console ourselves with Highgate Old Ale.

Another informal gathering to meet old friends and new. As well as enjoying the unspoilt 16th century farmhouse interior, members were able to enjoy Ansells Bitter, Hook Norton Best Bitter, Uley Pig's Ear and Westons Old Rosie cider, as well as a couple of interesting guest beers from micro-breweries.

The now traditional inter-branch Aunt Sally evening saw visiting teams from North Oxfordshire, Gloucestershire and Heart of Warwickshire branches at this Good Beer Guide 2003 listed pub. As well as the "normal" range of Hook Norton beers, there were three "vintage" beers which had been kept in the cellar for several months to mature and develop extra strength: Very Old Hooky and 340 Days were familiar to those who attended last year, while Triple Stout was a newcomer this year. Not surprisingly, these were limited to half-pints only.

We started at the Kings Head for Draught Bass and M&B Brew XI, and then moved on to the Stags Head, for a choice of no less than seven real ales - Fuller's London Pride (4.1%), Marston's Pedigree (4.5%), Shepherd Neame Spitfire (4.5%), and Taylor Landlord (4.3%), plus guests Draught Bass (4.4%), Greene King Abbot Ale (5.0%), and Warwickshire Best Bitter (3.9%).

A chance for local members of Shakespeare branch in Evesham and the Vale to see the changes wrought here. Three real ales were available: Batemans XB (3.7%), Wickwar Cotswold Way (4.3%), and Worthington 1744 (3.6%).

Shakespeare combined with the local Wizards to see off the powerful challengers minibussed in from Heart of Warwickshire and Gloucestershire branches. We also enjoyed both One For The Toad and Mother-In-Law from the in-house Wizard Brewery.

Wed 18th June 2003, George Hotel, Lower Brailes, Pub of the Year Presentation

Shakespeare branch honoured Brian and Alison Cocken and the staff of the George Hotel for their efforts in recent years. Seven Hook Norton beers were available including an early launch of Haymaker, and the Hook Norton horse-drawn dray was also in attendance. Members from Shakespeare and neighbouring branches were among the 700 people who came through the doors to make it a night to remember.

Shakespeare branch hosted a weekend meeting in the Function Room for CAMRA members from as far away as Hereford, Shrewsbury and Burton, as well as a few local members, and a guest speaker from Enterprise Inns. All seemed to enjoy the pub, its eight real ales, and the refreshments provided by Teej. So much so that the Bush may host a similar meeting next summer.

This meeting was organised by pub manager John Ellery, not by Shakespeare branch. David Waller, head brewer of Adnams gave a very interesting and informative talk with some unusual "props". This was followed by a quiz, prizes and free tastings.

We started at the Peacock, Tysoe, which featured five real ales: Draught Bass (4.4%), Fullers London Pride (4.1%), Hook Norton Best Bitter (3.4%), Theakston Best Bitter (3.6%) and York Yorkshire Terrier (4.2%). We then moved on to the Peacock, Oxhill for Courage Best Bitter (4.0%), Everards Beacon (3.8%) and Youngs Bitter (3.7%).

This time Shakespeare branch ventured east of Stratford to the Ferry at Alveston at 8.30, where we could enjoy Adnams Bitter (3.7%), Fullers London Pride (4.1%), Hook Norton Old Hooky (4.6%), and Marston Pedigree (4.5%). Then a short trip to the Crown at Tiddington for Black Sheep Best Bitter (3.8%), Caledonian Deuchar's IPA (3.8%), Marston Pedigree (4.5%) and Charles Wells Bombardier (4.3%)

A repeat of last year's successful Aunt Sally evening against North Oxfordshire Branch at this Good Beer Guide 2002 listed pub. We were also joined by teams from Gloucestershire and Heart of Warwickshire branches. Shakespeare failed to come through an all-Warwickshire first-round match, while the Oxonians eventually ran out winners. As well as five "normal" Hook Norton beers, there were two "vintage" beers which had been kept in the cellar for a long time to mature and develop extra strength. Very Old Hooky was a super-strong version of Old Hooky (4.6%), while some of last year's 12 Days (5.5%) was rebadged as 340 Days. Not surprisingly, these were limited to half-pints only.

A disappointing small attendance at Shakespeare's first Ilmington meeting for several years. Those brave enough to come enjoyed some excellent Hook Norton beers at the Red Lion before moving on to the Howard Arms for three real ales, including an excellent North Cotswold Genesis.

Shakespeare were welcomed by members of Gloucestershire's North Cotswold Sub-branch, for a visit to this delightful small town with plenty of fine pubs offering some interesting ales. Stops included the GBG-listed Volunteer, the Lygon arms, British Legion and Eigth Bells.

Shakespeare's 4th annual Aunt Sally evening at this Good Beer Guide 2002 listed pub. We were joined by the local experts and guests from Gloucestershire branches for an enjoyable evening's play. Hook Norton Best Bitter (3.4%) and a pair of guest beers were available to drown the sorrow of Shakespeare losing (again!!).

The Shakespeare branch Annual General Meeting was held in the Function Room to the rear of the pub. Eight real ales were available to members. CAMRA Regional Director, Andrew Shrigley, presented Teej and the staff with their Certificate for Shakespeare 2001/02 Pub of the Year, a third consecutive victory for the Bush.

Shakespeare members to sample Andy Miller's five Fat God's ales, Mild (4.0%), Bitter (3.6%), Morris Dancer (3.9%), Porter of the Vale (4.1%), and Thunder & Lightning (4.3%) while finalising our selections for the Good Beer Guide 2003. We decided to award Pub of the Year 2002 jointly to the Holly Bush, Alcester and the George Hotel, Lower Brailes. We were joined by Morris Allen of the Bridge Inn, Offenham, whose contribution was much appreciated by all present.

We started at the Bell where Boddingtons Bitter, Flowers Original, Hobsons Bitter, Hook Norton Old Hooky, and Wadworth 6X were available. Then we moved on to the Shakespeare for Draught Bass, Hook Norton Bitter, Tetley Mild, Timothy Taylor's Landlord and Charles Wells Bombardier. Nominations for the 2003 edition of the Good Beer Guide were drawn up, and inspection teams allocated.

Our first meeting at this well known pub, which is now in the hands of Graham Brown, formerly of the nearby Fleece at Bretforton. Shakespeare actually did see one of our Evesham area members there for a change. Flowers IPA (3.6%), Uley Pig's Ear (5.0%) and Fullers London Pride (4.1%) were the regular offerings, together with Timothy Taylor's Landlord (4.3%) as guest beer and Old Rosie cider from Weston's.

Another Good Beer Guide regular hosted Shakespeare branch's April meeting down by the riverside. Beers from Batemans, Caledonian, Ruddles and Theakston were available to the 12 souls who came on the courtesy minibus and others who made their own way. Highlights included a poetry reading from landlord Morris Allan, inluding the immortal Bridge at Offenham Ferry.

Shakespeare branch stepped just over the border into Solihull Branch territory for a jazz evening at this Good Beer Guide 2001 listed pub. John Smith Cask Bitter (3.8%), Everards Beacon Bitter (3.8%) and a 3.3% house beer from Everards were available. Members later moved on to the Blue Bell, where Ansells Mild (3.4%), Tetley Bitter (3.6%), Marston Pedigree (4.5%) and Wyre Piddle Piddle in the Wind (4.5%) were on sale.

Shakespeare branch's Christmas party failed to receive a planned visit from the Court Leet of Alcester and their Ale Tasters - they missed a treat! But the Rector (David Capron, who was instrumental in founding Shakespeare branch in the early 80's) did join us briefly for a pint of Buckshot after his service for the county Fire Brigade. Harviestoun Brooker's Bitter and Twisted (3.8%) was Champion Beer of Scotland 1999 and bronze medallist in 2000. Other beers were Nowster (3.5%) from JW Lees, Adnams Broadside (4.7%), Black Sheep Best Bitter (3.8%), Cannon Royall Fruiterers Mild (3.7%) and Buckshot (4.5%), and Uley Bitter (4.0%) and Pig's Ear (5.0%).

Shakespeare branch's first ever meeting in Bidford started at the Frog and Bulrush, where Draught Bass (4.4%), Greene King IPA (3.6%) and Abbot Ale (5.0%) and Wadworth 6X were available. We then moved on to the re-opened Bull's Head, for Greene King IPA (3.6%), Marstons Pedigree (4.5%) and Brains SA (4.2%). We were joined by Jon Pilling, the new Head Brewer at Cox's Yard in Stratford.

The third of our joint Shakespeare Pubs of the Year, is also the home of Fat God's Brewery. Many of the ales brewed on the premises were available, including the 4% Fat God's Mild on handpump. CAMRA's Area Organiser for Warwickshire, Steve Pampling, joined us, and members were able to pick up copies of the new 2001 Good Beer Guide.

Due to the petrol crisis fewer than originally expected braved the roads for a presentation on brewing. Fortunately the guests from Adnams brewery in Southwold, Suffolk, managed to get through to our joint Shakespeare Pub of the Year. Their presentation must have been enthusiastically received, for in the ensuing quiz almost everyone got nearly all the answers right!

Shakespeare branch attended the preview session of the Fleece Beer Festival, with over 50 real ales at once, plus ciders. Landlord Graham Brown was presented with a certificate naming the Fleece as Shakespeare's Pub of the Millennium, while he and Rory Spence from the Holly Bush in Alcester were also presented with Certificates as joint winners (with the Queens Head, Iron Cross) of Shakespeare's Pub of the Year.

A good turnout to play Aunt Sally in the garden. Quite a few youngsters there, showing more skill than their parents. We then retired to the pub for a shove-ha'penny mini-knockout, eventually won by landlord Mike Garner. Local beers were on offer - Hook Norton Best Bitter (3.4%), North Cotswold Genesis (4.0%) and Chippy Best from a newly-established micro in Chipping Norton.

Shakespeare's Annual General Meeting was held in the dining room. We were joined by Andrew Shrigley, West Midlands Regional Director and Steve Pampling, Warwickshire Area Organiser. With the election of new Membership and Social Secretaries, we hope to get more Branch activies going and more members involved. Watch out for details of brewery and/or pub trips.

Stanway brewer, Alex Penicuik was there, and members had a chance to chat informally. While finalising Shakespeare's submissions for the 2001 Good Beer Guide, we sampled his excellent Stanney Bitter (4.5%). Also available were Boddington Bitter (3.8%), Flowers IPA (3.6%) and Original (4.4%).

A voyage of discovery - at the Coach & Horses we found Hook Norton Best Bitter (3.4%); the Old Mill Hotel was still shut after flooding at Christmas; the Horseshoe boasted Bank's Original (3.5%), Ruddles Best Bitter (3.7%), Courage Directors (4.8%), and Castle Ale (4.6%) a guest beer from Warwickshire Brewing Co. The White Bear featured M&B Brew XI (3.8%), Draught Bass (4.4%), and Marstons Pedigree (4.5%). The White Horse and the Bell have both closed for the last time, while the George Hotel had one handpump, but the (undisclosed) beer was "off". Finally, the GBG-listed Black Horse had its regular Tetley Bitter (3.6%) and Greene King Abbot Ale (5.0%), alongside guests Conquest Golden Arrow (4.5%) and Ash Vine Charles Darwin (5.2.%). A turnout in double figures managed to sample most, if not all of this selection.

A sadly depleted number of members (due to no doubt to Manchester United's game against Valencia live on TV) had a first chance to sample Anna Davis's Millennium Mash (5.2%) brewed on the premises at Cox's Yard as well as the Jester (3.8%) and Wells Bombardier (4.3%). We then moved on to the Pen & Parchment where Boddington's, Pedigree and 6X were complemented by Brakspear Bitter (3.4%), Taylor Landlord (4.3%), Bateman's Rosey Nosey (5.2%) and an excellent Santa's Steaming Ale (5.5%) from Cottage Brewery of Somerset.

A goodly number of Shakespeare members were joined by a minibus from Cheltenham branch at the Hollybush, to bid farewell to Walter & Marion (and the M&B Mild (3.2%) and Adnams Broadside (4.7%)!). We then divided up into smaller groups which visited some or all of the Dog & Partridge, the Lord Nelson and the Turks Head before all meeting up again at the Three Tuns.

In the middle of Warwickshire Brewery Week members enjoyed North Cotswold Genesis (4.0%) and Frankton Bagby Squire's Brew (4.2%) as well as the regular beers from Goffs and Hobsons.
The gorgeous weather meant that the whole meeting took place outdoors on the terrace with views of the Cotswolds, Bredon and Malverns.

Members were joined by visitors from Gloucestershire, North Oxfordshire and Solihull branches.
In a three-way Aunt Sally match Shakespeare and their juniors (18 dolls) proved too strong for the combined visitors (14), but were overwhelmed by the Norman Knight side, who registered no less than 28 dolls.
The previous evening the Owlswick Morris Men and their guests, Hungarian dance troupe Fergettyv, had made a brave, but ultimately unsuccessful attempt to drink the pub dry, so CAMRA members were still able to enjoy Hook Norton Best Bitter (3.4%) and Generation (4.0%), North Cotswold Genesis (4.0%) and Coniston Bluebird (3.6%) .

Shakespeare's A.G.M. was quite well attended. Adrian Zawierka, CAMRA West Midlands Regional Director, gave us some valuable insights on campaigning in the region.
Membership Secretary Tom Brock has moved to Scotland, and in the absence of nominations for this post, Branch Chairman Bob MacVie agreed to assume these duties for the time being.
Courage Directors (4.8%), Hook Norton Best Bitter (3.4%), Morlands Old Speckled Hen (5.2%) and Theakston XB (5.2%) were available to ease the pain of so much formal business.

A good turn-out supplemented by half a dozen members of Redditch & Bromsgrove branch had their first chance to sample two new beers. Fat God's deliciously dark Porter of the Vale (4.1%) was voted a resounding success, and North Cotswold Genesis (4.0%) also went down a storm.
Later on, North Cotswold brewer Dave Tilbrook turned up and gave members the low-down on his new operation.
