Games in Pubs
With many pubs now converted into large single rooms, even darts, dominoes and crib are becoming a rarity in some areas. But there are still pubs that keep alive some more unusual games. These are the ones that we know about - let us know if you find any others. For a national overview of traditonal pub games, and a fuller description of the games, visit the Tradgames website. Aunt Sally

Has been described as " throwing the skittles at the ball" . Flourishes in south-east Warwickshire along the Oxfordshire border. Click here for a list of known outlets.

Bar Billiards

Up to the early nineties there was a bar billiards table in the passage by the much-loved rear bar of the Shakespeare Hotel in Stratford. Since the table at the Crown & Trumpet in Broadway finally expired in mid-1999, the only one still known to exist is at the Lord Nelson in Alcester.

Boules

The Moat House at King's Coughton has/had? sessions 12-3 Sundays and from 7pm Thursdays in summer.

Evesham Quoits

The Red Lion at Ilmington is a rare outlet for this competitive relation of hoop-la, as is the Crown & Trumpet in Broadway. It has also been reported at the Frog & Bulrush in Bidford-on-Avon

Ring the Bull

The sole known survivor was thought to be at the Crown & Trumpet in Broadway, but you can also find one at at White Hart, Newbold-on-Stour.

Shove Ha'penny

This ancient game can still occasionally be spotted at the Crown & Trumpet in Broadway, the Norman Knight at Whichford and the Mason's Arms at Wilmcote. It has recently appeared at the Frog & Bulrush in Bidford, where the Bull's Head also had Shove Ha'penny prior to closing temporarily in March 1999

Skittles

About ten skittle alleys survive. Usually you have to hire the room for the evening. Click here for a list of known outlets.

Table Skittles

The classic ball-and chain game, also known as Devil among the Tailors is practised at the Crown & Trumpet in Broadway and the Mason's Arms at Wilmcote, which also boasts Jenga and Nine Men's Morris.

Aunt Sally

The heartland of Aunt Sally is Oxfordshire, but the game thrives in adjoining parts of Warwickshire and many pubs have teams in the Chipping Norton League. Teams consist of eight players, and in each innings the player gets to throw six skittles at the Aunt Sally (commonly called the "doll"). There was a little-used Aunt Sally at the Bull's Head in Bidford before the pub closed temporarily in March 1999. Further information is available at the Tradgames website

Skittles

The traditional long-alley ninepins game still flourishes, with a surprising number of pubs retaining alleys. These are often booked by clubs and parties, where an evening's skittles and a basket meal is well appreciated as a pleasant night out.
