ShakesBeer is a quarterly newsletter produced by Shakespeare branch and distributed free to all CAMRA members in the area. We also try to put it into as many pubs as possible. ShakesBeer 31 came out in December 2006, ShakesBeer 32 in March 2007, and ShakesBeer 33 is scheduled for August 2007.

Alcester - May guests at the Holly Bush, Henley Street, included Blackwater Rigor Mortis (4.3%), Kelham Island Here Comes the Sun (4.2%) and Reason to Believe (4.0%), St Austell Tribute (4.2%), Charles Wells Bombardier (4.3%), Clarks Red Rag Mild (4.0%), Wye Valley Forgeman's Ale (4.2%), Teignworthy Ebb Tide (3.8%), Idle Idle Chef(4.0%), and Goffs Guinevere (4.1%). Alcester - May guests at the Three Tuns, High Street, included Everards Beacon (3.8%), Skinners Keel Over (4.2%), Church End What the Fox’s Hat (4.2%), Greene King Abbot Ale (5.0%), Brains Reverend James (4.5%), Otter Ale (4.5%), Sharps Doom Bar Bitter (4.0%), Hop Back Spring Zing (4.2%), Everards Tiger (4.2%), Springhead Roaring Meg (5.5%), Titanic English Glory (4.5%), Church End Fallen Angel (5.0%), Shepherd Neame Spitfire (4.5%), and Hydes 1863 Classic (3.5%), with Hobsons Mild (3.2%), CAMRA's Champion Beer of Britain 2007, appearing at the end of the month. Hobsons Best Bitter (3.8%) is the only regular ale, but up to seven guests can be available. (31 May 08)
Evesham - local guests at the Old Swanne Inne, High Street, included Malvern Hills Santler (3.6%), Goffs Jouster (4.0%) and Tournament (4.0%), while Palm and Anker Bruin had travelled a little bit further - from Belgium in fact! (29 May 08)
Evesham - the Angel Vaults in Port Street, finally reopened in April after flood damage, and real ale returned in late May in the shape of Brains Bitter (3.7%), which was reported to be "very drinkable". (29 May 08)
Badsey - Banks's Bitter (3.8%) was a guest at the Round of Gras at the end of May. Regular ales are Flowers IPA (3.6%), Uley Pigs Ear (5.0%) and Westons Old Rosie cider. (29 May 08)
Bretforton - May guests at the Fleece included Woods Wonderful (4.8%), Sharps Atlantic IPA (4.3%), and Abbeydale Arson (4.4&). The regular beers are Purity Brewing Pure UBU (4.5%), Hooky Bitter (3.6%), Uley Pigs Ear (5.0%) and Thatchers Heritage cider. (29 May 08)
Evesham - no change at the Vauxhall, on Merstow Green - the "For Sale" notice has been up since August 2006. In the meantime it continues to serve Greene King IPA (3.6%), Abbot Ale (5.0%) and Fullers London Pride (4.1%). (28 May 08)
Evesham - four real ales available at the Trumpet on Merstow Green. Hook Norton Best Bitter (3.4%), and Old Hooky (4.6%) are the regular beers on offer. Hook Norton Cotswold Lion (4.2%) and St Austell Proper Job (5.5%) were theguests at the end of May. (28 May 08)
Evesham - late May at the Royal Oak in Vine Street, saw no guest beers, just the regular Fullers London Pride (4.1%). The pub was to change hands on May 30th, so the range may well change (28 May 08)
Evesham - the guest at the Old Red Horse,Vine Street, in late January was Wychwood Hobgoblin (4.5&). Draught Bass (4.4%) and M&B Brew XI (3.8%) are regular ales together with Thatchers Cheddar Valley cider. (28 May 08)
Wootton Wawen - May guests at the Bulls Head were Marston's Merrie Monk (4.4%) and Bateman XXXB (4.8%). Banks's Bitter (3.8%) is the regular draught ale. (26 May 08)
Honeybourne - Wadworth 6X (4.3%) and Greene King Abbot Ale (5.0%) remain the regular ales at the Thatched Tavern. A May guest was Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%). (26 May 08)
Bidford-on-Avon - a May visit to the Plough revealed not only no real ale available, but the handpump had been removed from the bar counter. (26 May 08)
Barton - Black Sheep Best Bitter (3.8%) now seems to be a regular at the Cottage of Content. Shepherd Neame Spitfire (4.5%) is the other permanent real ale available. (26 May 08)
Shipston-on Stour - the three beers in late May at the George Hotel, High Street, were Fullers London Pride (4.1%), Morland's Old Speckled Hen (5.2%), and Timothy Taylor Golden Best (3.5%). There does not appear to be any regular. (24 May 08)
Bearley - Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) seems to be quite a regular offering at the Golden Cross. Also featured over the late Bank Holiday was Wye Valley Butty Bach (4.5%). (24 May 08)
Bidford-on-Avon - Charles Wells Bombardier (4.3%) and Banks's Bitter (3.8%) remain as the two real ales available at the Bulls Head. (19 May 08)
Hampton Lucy - the Village Idiot at the Boars Head in May was not human, but a 4.1% beer from White Horse brewery! (19 May 08)
Stratford-upon-Avon - May at the Golden Bee, Sheep Street, saw a rare guest from the Black Country in the shape of Holden's XB (4.2%). (18 May 08)
Bidford-on-Avon - the former Frog & Bulrush is now known as just the Frog and was offering Charles Wells Bombardier (4.3%) in mid-May. (17 May 08)
Stretton-on-Fosse - CAMRA members assembling at the Plough, for the presentation of the Shakespeare Branch Pub of the Year award, enjoyed Ansells Mild (3.4%), North Cotswold Sheeptown (4.3%), as guests. Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) and Purity Brewing Pure Gold (3.8%) or Pure UBU (4.5%) are the regular beers. (14 May 08)
Welford - Purity Brewing Pure Gold (3.8%) seems to be a regular offering at the Four Alls. Other guests in May included Timothy Taylor's Landlord (4.3%) and Wadworth 6X (4.3%). (11 May 08)

Offenham - the newly-renamed Fish at Offenham has a new web address to www.thefishatoffenham.co.uk which shows the guest ales for the week at the bottom of each page. In early May they were Purity Brewing Pure Gold (3.8%) and Greene King IPA (3.6%). Regular Beers are Wye Valley Wye Valley Bitter (3.7%) and Fullers London Pride (4.1%). (05 May 08)
Stratford-upon-Avon - two real ales are regulars at the Salmon Tail on Evesham road: Everards Tiger (4.2%) and Greene King IPA (3.6%). (01 May 08)
Offenham - May Day guests at the Bridge Inn were Wye Valley Wye Valley Bitter (3.7%) and Shepherd Neame Spitfire (4.5%). Caledonian Deuchar's IPA (3.8%) and Thatchers cider are the regular offerings. A beer festival is planned for the weekend of August 15th. (01 May 08)

Whichford - after the sale of the Norman Knight, fell through at the very last minute, Julian & Kitty's furniture has been returned from Liverpool. April saw Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) and 303AD (4.0%), Fullers London Pride (4.1%), and Highgate Fox's Nob (4.4%) on sale. (26 Apr 08)
Clifford Chambers - the New Inn still serves Greene King IPA (3.6%) but Fullers London Pride (4.1%) has been replaced by Draught Bass (4.4%). (27 Apr 08)
Tysoe - the four real ales on sale at the Peacock in late April were Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%), Adnams Broadside (4.7%), Draught Bass (4.4%) and Charles Wells Bombardier (4.3%). (26 Apr 08)
Stratford-upon-Avon - the Dirty Duck, Waterside, normally offers Flowers Original (4.4%), Greene King IPA (3.6%) and Morland's Old Speckled Hen (5.2%), but in late April Hardy & Hanson's Olde Trip (4.3%) had temporarily displaced the Flowers. (26 Apr 08)

Ardens Grafton - April guests at the Golden Cross were Bryson Hurricane (4.0%) and Courage Best Bitter (4.0%), alongside the regular Purity Brewing Pure UBU (4.5%) and Charles Wells Bombardier (4.3%). Summer will see Pure Gold (3.8%) take over from the Pure UBU (4.5%) (24 Apr 08)
Shipston-on Stour - thirsty morris men at the George Hotel, High Street, celebrated St George's day by shifting a cask of Black Sheep Best Bitter (3.8%) in under three hours. Five separate sides assembled to dance in the town square. Other ales on sale were Charles Wells Bombardier (4.3%) and Purity Brewing Pure UBU (4.5%). (23 Apr 08)

Alcester - real ale is not regularly available at the Cross Keys, Stratford Road, but landlord Nigel Burchill is holding a beer festival over the Mayday Bank Holiday, with probably seven or eight real ales to see if it can become a regular thing. (22 Apr 08)
Upper Brailes - the Gate had April guests in the shape of Shepherd Neame Bishops Finger (5.0%) and Hook Norton Double Stout (4.8%). Hooky Bitter (3.6%) is the regular ale. (21 Apr 08)
Long Compton - a St George's day guest at the Red Lion was Wadworths Manns St George & The Dragon (4.5% as well as the regular Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%). (20 Apr 08)
Iron Cross - the Queens Head is advertising itself as a Balti place, with meals available either in the pub or takeaway. Charles Wells Bombardier (4.3%) remains the only real ale. (20 Apr 08)
Harvington - the Golden Cross finally reopened just before Christmas and is reported to be serving Adnams Bitter (3.7%) as its sole real ale. (20 Apr 08)

Ettington - the Houndshill seems to have settled on Greene King IPA (3.6%) and Shepherd Neame Spitfire (4.5%) for its two regular ales.(16 Apr 08)
Ettington - the White Horse had Little Drinks Co Trojan (4.5%) as an April guest alongside the regular Shepherd Neame Spitfire (4.5%). (16 Apr 08)
Ettington - the Chequers, has now settled on a range of three regular cask ales: Black Sheep Best Bitter (3.8%), Fullers London Pride (4.1%) and Greene King Abbot Ale (5.0%). (16 Apr 08)
Stratford-upon-Avon - April at the Golden Bee, Sheep Street, saw Wetherspoon's spring International Real-Ale Festival continue. Ales available included JW Lees Brewers Dark (3.5%), Caledonian Chocolate Drop (3.8%), Cain's Bock Beer (4.5%), Harviestoun Old Engine Oil (4.5%), Okells Dr Okells Eastern Spice (4.5%), Ecaussinnes Cookie Beer (5.0%) from Belgium, Yo-Ho Tokyo Black (5.0%) from Japan, and Stone Brewery California Double IPA (7.0%) from the United States. During the festival, the only regular beer available was Marston's Pedigree (4.5%), the other nine handpumps all serving festival ales. (15 Apr 08)

Evesham - the Old Swanne Inne, High Street, had some exotic visitors at the end of Wetherspoons fortnight-long International Real-Ale Festival. Ecaussinnes Cookie Beer (5.0%) from Belgium, Namyslow Original Plum Beer (4.0%) from Poland, Stone Brewery California Double IPA (7.0%) from the United States, and Yo-Ho Tokyo Black (5.0%) from Japan made up the international contingent, with Marston's representing England with Pedigree Six (6.0%) brewed exclusively for Wetherspoons. Stratford-upon-Avon - the Rugby Club, Loxley Road was offering Stone's Pure Gold (4.1%) as a guest in early April. (09 Apr 08)
Lower Brailes - the George Hotel is back to three draught beers as winter recedes. The previously solitary Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) was joined in April by Marston's Pedigree (4.5%) and Shepherd Neame Spitfire (4.5%). (08 Apr 08)

Stratford-upon-Avon - a "guest" at the Garrick, High Street, in April was Hardy and Hanson's Olde Trip (4.3%) - the brewery was bought and closed by Greene King. Regular beers are Greene King IPA (3.6%), Abbot Ale (5.0%) and Morland's Old Speckled Hen (5.2%). (07 Apr 08)
Offenham - the Fish and Anchor is now known as the Fish at Offenham and has seen many changes in the recent refurbishment. The previous bar and restaurant have been combined into one large area, and an original flagged floor has been uncovered in the bar area. Two regular real ales and three rotating guest ales are promised. (08 Apr 08)
Oxhill - the early April guest at the Peacock was Adnams Explorer (4.3%). Greene King Abbot Ale (5.0%) and Timothy Taylor Golden Best (3.5%) are the regular offerings. (04 Apr 08)
Bidford-on-Avon - Shepherd Neame Spitfire (4.5%) graced the pumps at the Plough in late March and early April. The pub is closed Tuesday lunchtimes and all day Monday. (04 Apr 08)
Evesham - no change to the beer at the recently reopened Northwick Hotel on Waterside. Flacons Bar (which does its own bar meals) continues to serve Fullers London Pride (4.1%), as it did before last summer's floods. (03 Apr 08)
Evesham - the Trumpet on Merstow Green has been awarded 4 Stars for the excellence of hygiene standards in its bars, kitchen and toilets. The Scores on the Doors scheme is run by local councils in Worcestershire and Herefordshire, and covers all catering establishments. (02 Apr 08)
Welford - the Shakespeare was national winner in the March round of the Proud of Your People competition run by The Publican magazine to highlight pubs where management and staff take an active role in their communities. It will go forward to the grand final in November. Landlady Louise Gargan said "We are thrilled to have received the award. This has now been added to our recent Cask Marque award and excellent reviews we have been getting of late. Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) and Purity Brewing Pure UBU (4.5%) are the regular beers. Whichford - latest news from the Norman Knight, is that Julian & Kitty's move to the Liverpool area has been cancelled as the sale of their pub has fallen through at the last minute. They had even moved their furniture out but had at least retained a bed! (30 Mar 08)

Guests earlier in the month included Arundel Sussex Gold (4.2%), Dark Star Hophead (3.8%), Cotleigh Barn Owl(4.5%), Nethergate Old Growler (5.0%), Brains Bread of Heaven (4.0%), Highgate Fat Catz (4.8%), Dorset Jurassic (4.7%), Cain's Finest Bitter (4.0%), Bath Festivity (5.0%), Greene King Wexford (4.4%) and Exmoor Gold (4.5%). Evesham - reopened on 7th March, in time for Cheltenham week, the Northwick Hotel on Waterside, has been completely refurbished with a new bar, restaurant and reception on the ground floor, as well as 29 en-suite bedrooms. Landlady Marilyn has bought six Hebridean rare breed sheep which were bound for the abbatoir, but will now live out their lives in the paddock and act as the pub's lawnmower. A guest that did appear was Badger Tanglefoot (4.9%). Alcester - a plethora of Halloween-themed guests as the Holly Bush, Henley Street, held its Oktoberfest in the first weekend of November: Ossett Spellbound (4.3%), Salopian Fly by Night (4.0%), Wychwood Hobgoblin (5.0%), Holden's Golden Glow (4.4%), Caledonian Trick or Treat (4.6%), Marstons Wicked Witch (4.6%), Wentworth Harem Scarem (4.0%), Morgan's Holy Water (4.2%), Blackwater Satan (4.3%), Milk Street Witching Hour (4.5%), North Cotswold Cotteswold Phantom (4.5%), Wye Valley Big Cat Bitter (4.9%), Hornbeam Golden Wraith (5.0%), and Oldershaw Alchemy (5.3%). There was also a "festival special" brewed by Uley -Ghoulies in the Bush (4.0%). Stratford-upon-Avon - Ian, the new licensee at the Cross Keys , Ely Street is pleased that his pub is becoming popular with the type of client he wants to attract, after an initial drop in trade as he "lost" the undesirables. Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) is his first real ale, and the next one may well be from Wizard Brewery. Ian knows their products from the time when he had the food franchise at Brailes Golf Club . Stratford-upon-Avon - refurbishment is now complete at the Hole in the Wall, Guild Street, It also has a new name, Bar Room Bar, or B.R.B.) but alas no change in its policy of no real ale. Tredington - Flowers IPA (3.6%) has been a replacement at the White Lion for Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) which was regarded as "inconsistent", but it is hoped that the Hooky will soon return. There is also a rotating guest beer with Adnams Broadside (4.7%) and Everards Tiger (4.2%) proving the most popular. A notice on the door says 'Jane & Keith thank all their customers for support over five years and the pub will reopen soon with new tenants'. The pub has been a regular in the Good Beer Guide: up to closing it offered Greene King IPA (3.6%) and Abbot Ale (5.0%) as regular beers, with two guests from independents and regionals such as Adnams Broadside (4.7%) and Marstons Pedigree (4.5%). Stratford-upon-Avon - Banks's Bitter (3.8%) was the only real ale available at the Lamplighter, Rother Street at the end of September. (25 Sep 07)
Iron Cross - real ale has been "temporarily" discontinued at the Queens Head due to a diastrous drop-off in trade. Although the pub was not flooded in the recent deluge, some 500 Polish workers have been sent home early and several dozen caravan customers have been washed away. Harvington - in mid-July a notice appeared on the door of the Golden Cross - "Closed for three days due to a refurbishment". It was still closed in late September, and, according to local gossip, is unlikely to reopen. (25 Sep 07)
Harvington - after finding the Coach & Horses closed one lunchtime, we were told by a villager that from Monday to Thursday it opens in the evenings only. (25 Sep 07)
Evesham - visits in August and September to the the Oddfellows Arms in Briar Close revealed that Greene King IPA (3.6%) is not regularly available, but the Abbot Ale (5.0%) is still to be had. (25 Sep 07)
Alcester - Titanic Iceberg (4.1%) made a guest appearance at the Lord Nelson, Birmingham Road in September. Regular ales are Greene King IPA (3.6%), Charles Wells Bombardier (4.3%), and Thatchers Cheddar Valley cider. (25 Sep 07)
Armscote - the Fox & Goose sometimes has a guest beer on sale. Although none was available in early August, September saw a well maintained Ossett Pale Gold (3.8%). Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) and Shepherd Neame Spitfire (4.5%) remain as the regular beers. (23 Sep 07)
Whatcote - Charles Wells Bombardier (4.3%) was a guest at the Royal Oak in August, with Brains SA (4.2%) appearing in September. Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) and Old Hooky (4.6%) remain the regular fare. (22 Sep 07)
Kineton - Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) is now the only real ale at the Swan, as demand does not warrant continuing to offer a guest beer in addition. (22 Sep 07)
Great Alne - the Mother Huffcap is expected to reopen in late November or early December after a £1.2 million refurbishment. The newly appointed managers have apparently previously worked at the Swan Hotel in Alcester. (20 Sep 07)
Shottery - the Bell is currently closed for major refurbishment, but is scheduled to be open again around the end of October. Before closure Greene King IPA (3.6%) was the sole real ale, but hopefully it will stock more in future. (20 Sep 07)
Welford - contractors finally started clearing up at the Four Alls in mid-September. Until then it looked exactly as it was the day after the floods. No date is yet known for re-opening, and the website is unavailable. Wadworth 6X (4.3%) and Shepherd Neame Spitfire (4.5%) were the draught beers on offer. (20 Sep 07)
Stratford-upon-Avon - refurbishment is nearing completion at the Hole in the Wall, Guild Street and it is expected to reopen in early October. But you won't get very good odds on there being real ale available there. (20 Sep 07)
Stratford-upon-Avon - although the Garrick, High Street, boasts a fourth "guest beer" alongside its regular Greene King IPA (3.6%), Abbot Ale (5.0%) and Morland's Old Speckled Hen (5.2%), this "guest" not infrequently turns out to have also been brewed by Greene King: the September offering of Ruddles County (4.3%) was a case in point. Apparently Abbot Ale outsells each of the others by 2 to 1. (20 Sep 07)

Evesham - the Gardeners Arms on Littleworth Street boasts a solitary handpump amongst all the keg fonts, but although the landlord has succesffully completed cellamanship course run by both Hook Norton and the BII, there just doesn't seem to be enough demand for this freehouse to stock a real ale. Evesham - the former BBC Club in High Street has been renamed Ecgwins Club in honour of the saint who founded the town's abbey in 701AD. This private members club has no reciprocal arrangements to admit members of any other organisation, although temporary membership can be arranged for pre-booked parties. Membership costs in the region of £30 a year. The club runs a small beer festival around Easter, and usually has at least three real ales on handpump: September saw Marstons Pedigree (4.5%), Fullers London Pride (4.1%) and Everards Beacon (3.8%). Bidford-on-Avon - three real ales are available at the Frog & Bulrush . Greene King IPA (3.6%) is the regular, and Wychwood Hobgoblin (5.0%) and Adnams Broadside (4.7%) were September guests. (18 Sep 07)
Cherington - Brains Reverend James (4.5%) was a popular guest at the Cherington Arms. Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) and Old Hooky (4.6%) are available as regular beers. (17 Sep 07)

Shipston-on Stour - Bath SPA (3.7%) was an August guest at the White Bear, High Street, with two Yorkshire ales in September - Saltaire Blonde (4.0%) and Copper Dragon Golden Pippin (3.9%). Hook Norton Old Hooky (4.6%) and Adnams Bitter (3.7%) are the two regular ales. (16 Sep 07)
Tredington - Flowers IPA (3.6%) is now the permanent replacement at the White Lion for Hook Norton Hooky Bitter (3.6%) which was regarded as "inconsistent". There is also a rotating guest beer from the Punch Taverns guest list: late July saw Adnams Broadside (4.7%) in place. (16 Sep 07)
Wootton Wawen - Everards Tiger (4.2%) was a September guest beer at the Bulls Head. The regular beers are Banks's Bitter (3.8%) and Marston's Pedigree (4.5%). The pub does not open at all on Mondays. (12 Sep 07)
