Featured in the very first Good Beer Guide in 1974 and all but a handful since, this famous old National Trust owned village pub was left to the NT by former licensee, Lola Tamplin. It re-opened in 2005 following a fire which all but gutted much of the interior. Fortunately the public area escaped almost unscathed, including the world-famous collection of 17th century pewter-ware. The restoration has been excellent and the pub remains one of the stars of CAMRA's National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. Elected Shakespeare Branch Pub of the Year and Pub of the Millennium, in 2000 and CAMRA Worcestershire Pub of the Year 2006. Visitors may drink inside or in the orchard, which is especially good for familes in fine weather and the site of the famous asparagus auction in the (very short) season. Informal folk music gathering on Thursdays in the Pewter Room. Fruit wines available. No parking facilities at the pub, but a small number of places in the Square. A sole bedroom is available for B&B.
