TV and Radio

What is it about our childhood that makes us so nostalgic for it? Perhaps it was the lack of responsibility. Or that we perceive life to have been simpler and better then? Perhaps it's just the rose-tinted spectacles. Whatever it is, I (like many people) hanker after many experiences from my childhood. After all, everything was better then, wasn't it?

A treasured set of memories, are those of my favourite children's telelvision programmes. Programmes like Bagpuss, Trumpton, Fingerbobs and many others. Then there are the comedies that I remember from growing up as being excellent; ones such as Yes, Prime Minister, To The Manor Born, "Butterflies" and The Good Life.

These days I don't find that there's much worth watching on the television. There's the science and nature programmes (many made by the BBC) which are still excellent, plus some of the history and gardening programmes. But there's not a lot else, apart from BBC news and weather (a slight bias here, but I so prefer the BBC's output for a lot of things).

I don't own a television (being only a poor university student) and so if I want to watch anything, I have to go and watch it on the communal television set. That is, if no-one else has got there first and is watching something else. So there are very few programmes that I actually bother to go and watch. Three in fact, Have I Got News For You, Red Dwarf and Time Team.

What I do do, is listen to the radio; Radio 4 and Radio 2 in particular. There are a lot of good programs on, such as: "The News Quiz", I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue, "Just A Minute", King Street Junior and the "The Archers".
