History
Stoke-on-Trent is made of six separate towns, each with its own Town Hall, distinct character and identity. The six towns, Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley, Stoke, Fenton and Longton were federated in 1910, and received city status in 1925. Stoke-on-Trent is famous world-wide for its pottery industry, Burslem being the birthplace of Josiah Wedgwood and the site of the first factory.
Gladstone pottery museum is preserved as the only example in the potteries of a 19th century pottery factory with cobbled yard, original workshops and huge bottled kilns. At Wedgwood Visitor center you can see the skilled potters and decorators at work creating today's pottery products. The City Museum and Art Gallery in Hanley boasts the worlds finest collection of Staffordshire pottery, from medieval times to the present day.
